I love to be surprised by delightful things. I keep a journal in which I document what delights me every day. It is not a record of what happened or how I felt, but a small remembrance of something I appreciated. Some days it’s huge, other days it’s seemingly insignificant, but it mattered in some way.
I get so excited to look back on my year and extract those highlights. Here are my Top Five:
The Spotify Daylist.
I sorta hate that Spotify knows exactly how old I am and precisely what I was listening to in high school. But the randomness of the “Daylist,” (which also draws from my current listening habits) keeps me guessing and eliminates my need to determine what to listen to. I’m at it’s mercy…
Rachel Cusk
I hate that I’ve only just discovered her work. Her writing is profound and her stories just linger with me, nearly inexplicably.
I love to bake, but I hate trying to find the “best” recipe for something. Who makes the best chocolate chip cookies? She has done the work for me…
Dune, Part II
The Dune series is so NOT my kind of film. But, I love them so much. The cinematography is stunning, the characters are compelling (and beautiful), the story is engaging. I’ve never read the books, but the films have blown my mind.
New friends
I attended a “big” writers conference this year. It was a splurge and an indulgence that I’ll write about some other time. But, the best part of the experience was meeting new writer friends, with whom I hope to stay in touch for a long time.
Tell me. What has delighted you this year? What new experience or resource are you glad for?
